Camping: Need Help with Coleman Tent!?
April 25th, 2010 | by admin |I’m driving across the US on Interstate 40 this spring. I plan to do some camping. I have a nice Coleman tent my sister loaned me. It is the kind with two long, jointed, flexible rods that slide into sleeves on the tent. You tie them at the top, and raise the thing.
I am having trouble, lol. I followed directions: I can stake the ends of the tent using the D rings no prob, I can insert those two rods, cross them in the center, but when it comes to “applying pressure” to raise the thing off the ground, I’m just kinda lost.
For one thing, it seems like the directions are directing me to put the tips of the rods into a metal ringed hole in the corner of the tent… but it doesn’t fit in there more than a 1/4″ inch or so. Is that how it’s supposed to be?
I guess they’re saying tension raises the tent? I don’t want to break the rod though, don’t really know how to get past this step.
Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

I know what you mean as I found the same thing with my north face tent but they won’t break. Ask your sister about it.

The way that I do it is to place one end of both rods in to the place where it goes and then take the rod on the bottom of the pile and place the other end in the ring. Then I do the same with the rest.

The fiberglass rods on dome tents will bend a lot farther than you think. I normally stake the tent down last (assuming this is a dome tent where the two poles cross at the peak).
To raise the tent, put one of the pegs into the base of the pole. Then go to the other end of the pole and bend it until the peg will go into that side. Repeat with the other pole. It may be a little difficult or weird at first, but with practice you’ll get the hang of it.

on those metal rings on the corners of the tent there should be a pin . that should be inserted into end of the pole after you push it through the sleeve and do the same thing on all four corners.that should create the tension needed to hold up the tent and keep it from slipping. if your afraid of breaking the pole, make sure its not caught on the sleeve at the joints . its alot easier when you have a buddy helping you
p.s it pretty much works this way with most tents
