I’m looking for a fire retardant family camping tent, anyone know of any sites that have…?
May 14th, 2010 | by admin |…just those kinds of tents?
I’m trying to find one that has the capacity of ten or more people. I and whoever else that camps with me will be using air mattresses instead of sleeping bags so I want to make sure I still have plenty of room in the tent because the air mattresses are queen size and the big raised style kind. My budget that I set for one is no more than $250. A three season tent is all I will need because I only plan on using it in the spring and summer. Some of the brands I have already looked at are Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shop, Trek, Wincester, and Coleman tents that say they’re fire retardant. Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can give me. I’ve been searching off and on for two months and if I don’t find one soon it will be too cold in my area to camp.

if you have 10 people with Queen size air matt, your going to need a large tent,
around 20 feet by 20 feet
try a army surplus’s, get a GP tent, it is a 3 season tent, and can be sprayed with fire retardant,
and it going to cost you more than $250

$250 isn’t going to do it. If you get rid off the air mattress requirement you might find something. An outfitters tent might be large enough for your needs. Cabelas has them but they will be in the $1500 range.
Every tent I have have run across is fire retardant. But I don’t know about the big canvas tents I have never actually seen one in person.

I copied an offer for a family-sized tent from backcountry.com. Note it says it is the last one available.
I have not been able to determine whether or not it is fireretardent.

My family is really into out door activities. We do not live close by to a major camping store, so we have found that REI.com really offers a lot of selection for all of the outdoor supplies that we need.

Good luck finding a fire retardant tent that can hold 10 people for under $250. Good luck finding any tent for 10 or more people for under $250

BeachBum nailed it and remember……..Fire retardent is NOT fire proof!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe that most tents sold today are fire retardant. That doesn’t mean they are fire proof. It means it won’t support combustion. It will still burn or melt, but will not burst into flames. You are probably going to need a canvas wall tent. But for the size you are looking for, you’ll have to spend way more than $250. Be safe and use no flames inside the tent. Set up a reasonable distance from the fire pit.

You are going to have to spend some money. More than 250.
All tents have a label that says “NO FLAME IN TENT” for a reason.

FYI any tent, even the canvas ones, sold in the US have to be fire retardant. That is the reason they can’t sell those “throw up tents” that unfold before your eyes…..yeah, they went up in flames just like the old pintos.
I will say you might want to skip camping this year and wait for next spring, I don’t think $250 will get you a quality tent in that size. There is nothing worse than having drove 4 hours to go camping and have a “freak” storm roll in and find out your tent leaks, this happened to a family that went camping with us…after all the kids cloths got wet they ended up packing and driving home…it sucked that it was the first day of a long weekend trip.
Another thing that I would recommend would be a “porch” or covered area just outside of the tent, this way you can leave your shoes outside the tent and they wont get damp when the dew starts to form, it also helps if it is raining, you can be covered while you towel off and take you muddy wet clothes off before actually going into the tent as well. Hope that help and good luck.
