Is it okay to stuff a mummy sleeping bag into a stuff bag?

April 23rd, 2010 | by admin |

I just recently purchased a fine coleman mummy sleeping bag. Would it be safe to stuff it into the stuff bag or do I really have to take the time to fold the sleeping bag air tight shut and then place it into the stuff bag?

I don’t want to damage my sleeping bag because it was so expensive. I would like to take care of it as much as possible.

Yeah its cool. Just dont STORE the bag in the stuff sack for prolonged periods. This could damage the fill. I figured out for myself its a lot easier to stuff it starting with the foot end. That way, as you stuff, it compresses the air out making it easier. Oh yeah. I would really recommend sleeping in long johns or buying an inexpensive sleeping bag liner. That way you dont have to wash it all the time. I washed my $189 dollar sleeping bag once. And I can definitly tell its lost about 20 percent of its loftiness.

When you are storing your sleeping bag the best thing to do is to hang it up in the closet not stuffed in the stuff sack. If you dont have room in your closet you can lay it flat under your bed. My last resort for storing it would be to get an XXL pillow case and put in there loosely as possible.

You do not want to store the sleeping bag tightly stuffed in the stuff sack otherwise the insulation will become damaged and you will loose loft. Its ok to just stuff in there for the trip but it`s usually the last thing I pack (I have a separate sleeping bag compartment accessible from outside the pack) and the first thing I take out after my tent (well I use a hammock now) is setup.
