Running from an air mattress full of GOOD Woodgas. READ THE DESCRIPTION

April 25th, 2010 | by admin |

Sorry about the lighting, it was getting dark when I did this. There has been some discussion as of late in the woodgas yahoo group tech.groups.yahoo.com about compressing woodgas in a tank for later use. It is not worth the cost of compression let alone without specialized equipment to monitor and systems to purify the gas, it is a terrible idea to trust corrosive chemicals inside of steel containers under pressure as it will probably lead to a tank rupture in a short time. Just to put the question to rest though, I have just done this little demonstration for those who are thinking of doing it. NO I didn’t put it under high pressure though, I only filled up an air mattress with GOOD CLEAN KNOWN woodgas. RE-READ that last sentence. I have a very reliable little gasifier and know when it is producing GOOD CLEAN GAS. First, I used a vacuum to suck all of the air out of the mattress. Then I flared the woodgas before filling to be sure the gas started good and then when the air mattress was full, I disconnected it and flared my woodgas at the BLOWER to be sure it was still producing good gas. That way, there is little chance any oxygen got into the mattress and in the event of a backfire which my little engine doesn’t do anyway, I won’t blow myself up or at the least burn off all of my hair and damage my ear drums. Once full, I ONLY piped the air mattress into the carb and started the engine. I did NOT try to flare the mattress for the aforementioned reasons above and

@ChrisPCrunchy Well, no, first you have to sleep with great ear plugs. Then what you do is run two air mattresses on top of one another and as one is being deflated by the engine, you fill the other one with the exhaust from the engine. Your bed will be warm and toasty too :)

Thanks for the humorous comment Chris, we can all use a good laugh now and again.

Wouldnt the motor running keep you awake? Wouldnt the mattress become uncomfortable as it was deflated by the motor? I think I will stick with air in my mattress when I go camping.

Oh yeah, I’ll add the yahoo link to the description. True, a screen or layered steel like a marine carb flash suppressor would do the trick.

This is probably in the top 10 on woodgas tech. Can you include a yahoo group link? This goes great with the backfire arrestors we are currently discussing.
