There are tons and tons of camping supply stores where you can get an amazing air mattress for cheap. Mainly because a lot of New Yorkers do an excessive amount of camping. Not to mention the size/weight limit on planes (as someone else said). If you want to sleep on it the night you arrive then purchasing it ahead of time makes sense. The last thing you want to do your first day in New York is to go out and have to buy one. If you cannot mail it to someone there, I would just take it with me. You will end up paying the excess luggage price in cab fare hauling around Manhattan trying to get one.
