Interesting. I ...
Interesting. I don't hold the top of the holes when going downhill - just rest your hand on the straps when going downhill. By putting your hand through the straps from below and up, you can swing the poles outward. Note: I used gloves!

You look an idiot ...
You look an idiot when using poles at all, regardless of how. Poles are to hiking, what beige shorts and a hip-pack are to tourism. Do you see the military using poles? Hiking is supposed to be about getting back to basics. People seem to want a device for everything, what is wrong with your god given legs? They'll adapt to the strain if you don't rely on ridiculous poles.

We don't use hiking ...
We don't use hiking poles in the military because we generally have our rifles in our hands. I can see the usefulness of hiking poles if you have a heavy pack though. I prefer a rifle though. As for the hat getting you up twice as fast, interesting theory... quickly Boy Wonder, to the bat cave!
