What should be in a hiking backpack?

See the website below for a list of everything you need in a lightweight pack. The base weight of my pack is around 11-12 pounds. I can walk all day with that weight and my knees don’t hurt. Always take the 10-essentials (listed on the site) and be sure that you have some satisfying meals (also found on the site). After hiking for a long day, nothing satisfies better than a hot meal. For fun, look at the alcohol stove page and learn how to make your own alcohol stove for free from things laying around your house.

Depends upon a whole lot of factors, really – but let’s say you are headed out to the woods for a day hike….. you should have:
- an "emergency kit": a small kit that can either be bought at almost any outdoor supply store, or assembled yourself. It should contain water purification pills, needle and strong thread (i find dental floss works great: it is surprisingly strong!), a couple of safety pins, waterproof matches, perhaps a spare jacknife, some strong string, and a partrige in a pear tree (or a compass, whichever helps you find directions better) – and some tin foil and/or a little mirror to signal planes or other people if you need to – and a couple of bandaids and an elastic wraparound thingie in case you sprain something or need a tourniquet.
- A dry pair of socks.
- A sweater or jacket in case the weather changes
- A lightweight rain jacket with a hood.
- At least a liter of water, more if it is hot. Most folks can easily survive for weeks without food, but only a couple of days without water!!
- A topographical map of the area: getting lost can be surprisingly easy.
- Some snack-food, like peanuts and raisens or granola bars or something to help keep your blood sugar levels up, especially in a pinch!!
- In some areas, bug repellent and sun block cream would come in handy.
- Perhaps a spare hat.
May seem like a lot of stuff, but if you should happen to need any of them, you’ll be glad you came prepared!!

Two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers… Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that you’ll need all that for the trip, but once you get into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.
