No exaggeration – the rafting trip of a lifetime in a 4-minute high definition overview. Last May, our videographer had the privilege of taking a raft trip down the Grand Canyon from Lees Ferry to Bar 10 Ranch. The 7-day, 188 mile expedition was aboard “Wilderness River Adventures down the Colorado River on a motor-powered raft. This is a bonus feature “Rafting the Grand Canyon” on the new edition of Finley-Holiday’s “Complete Grand Canyon DVD.” For raft trip info, visit www.riveradventures.com. Wilderness River Adventures is operated by ARAMARK, a concessioner authorized by the National Park Service to provide guided raft trips in Grand Canyon National Park. The crews of Wilderness River Adventures have a deep respect for the Canyon. They work hard to reduce each trips environmental footprint and help visitors discover that same respect for environmental stewardship of this precious landscape. Available on location and from www.finleyholiday.com. Produced by Finley-Holiday Films.

1984 Cataract Canyon High Water Big Drop 2 & 3 at over 100000 CFS. Colorado River & Trail Expeditions’ motorized raft operated by boatman Nathan Jones. Big Drop II with Little Niagara looking gigantic. Satan’s Gut also looks incredible at the top of Big Drop 3. Cataract Canyon peaked on May 27, 1984 at 114900 cfs. During the high water of 1983 and 1984 multiple motorized rafts turned over in the Big Drops. Cataract Canyon is considered Class V by the National Park Service during high flows. The average peak flow is about 50000 cfs. This video of Big Drop 2 and 3 is more than double that.

Entry from: Gunnison, United States Entry Title: “Black Canyon of the Gunnison” Entry: “The dark and lush beauty of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park compelled us to stray from our plan to drive to the rim only. So impressed were we, that we obtained a backcountry permit, talked about the 1.5 hr descent with a ranger, and changed into our hiking gear. About 35 minutes into it though, still struggling with fatigue due to altitude and uncomfortable with the very narrow, rocky, non-maintained trail, we turned around and went back to the car. We proceeded with the rim drive as planned and then got back on the road to Boulder. Highway 285 came highly reccommended by just about everyone we spoke to in the region, and though not as straight a course as Hwy 70 to Hwy 25, we took the scenic route and our eyes were rewarded.” Read and see more at: www.travelpod.com Photos from this trip: 1. “Black Canyon” 2. “Black Canyon Floor” 3. “Below the rim” 4. “View of canyon floor” 5. “Painted Wall at Black Canyon” 6. “Views form Hwy 285″ 7. “Views from 285″ See this TripWow and more at tripwow.tripadvisor.com

I think I have UV filters for all lenses, but I need to check. Any other equipment recommended for this trip? I do know I need to get a tripod.

I will likely be taking one of those preplanned day trips which includes a plane ride over the canyon, a hike, a 4WD ride, and rafting (not white water). I will also have some time to look about on my own.

I will be leaving Phoenix on Thur and driving up Route 66 to Tusayan. From there I’ll be staying at Thur, Fri, and Sat night in Grand Canyon, AZ. Friday will likely be the tour. Saturday I may drive to Sedona.
Mere Mortal: I am a complete novice at photography – I only got my camera about 6 months ago. A spare camera body is beyond me right now.
I should also note that I am flying in to Phoenix, so packing too much gear is less than ideal.
I also have a small video camera which I will also be bringing along.
