Entry from: Field, Canada Entry Title: “12K Hike, Switchbacks & Tunnels” Entry: “Today we went on, what turned out to be, a beautiful hike to Johnston Canyon. Now obviously anything that carries the Johnston name will be amazing so we decided to make it a stop in our journey. We were all packed up from our campsite and had our hiking gear on with our CamelBak (backpack filled with water) and thought we were ready to go, but once we got to the start of the trail there was a sign that said that we could also access the Inkpots by this trail… but that was 6km away… one way. So back to the car we went and packed the other backpack with some fruit and snacks as we’d be gone well past lunch. Johnston Canyon is a very long narrow canyon which has been carved out of the rock by the river running through it. There must have been at least 4 waterfalls and many beautiful views. There is a platform attached the side of the canyon when there isn’t land to walk on. At the ‘Lower Falls’ there was a platform that led us across the river and through a cave that brought us right beside the waterfalls! It was obviously a wet place to stand and when we were there the first time there was a little girl who was NOT excited to be there, but we were! Once we were past the falls, the number of hikers decreased …

Entry from: Busan, Korea Rep. Entry Title: “Beomeosa Temple on a Sunday” Entry: “Another lovely day and I was up early to get a good start to Beomeosa Temple. A little way out of the city it was certainly do-able in a morning and judging by the amount of Koreans decked out in hiking gear it was a popular destination. The temple was founded in AD678 although like almost all of Korea’s ancient buildings and monuments it was destroyed at some point during Japanses invasions or wars and subsequently been rebuilt. It wasn’t too far out of town to be easily reachable. The subway line takes you away from Busan centre and on to Beomeosa station, where you then exit into what seems more like a local village than a suburb of a city. I liked this. It reinforced my view that it is possible to live in a big, urban happening centre and yet within a half hours travel have peaceful and serene places to go and relax. Korea certainly doesn’t disappoint with this. Cities and towns nestle quite happily beneath hills and mountains, so it is easy to leave the urban life for a day or afternoon and get back to nature. From the subway station I took a walk up the hill to the centre of the village to catch the bus that went up to the temple. For all of my early start to Sunday, I wasn’t alone. The temple is at the foot of Mt …

Leave the push-button world behind and come on along for a Nutnfancy backpacking trip. It seems like it’s always a sacrifice to peel away from the world and make it out to my wilderness places. Messages pile up, phones go unanswered, emails fill the inbox, and careers are put aside for awhile. But it’s always worth it and it creates one of those special memorable experiences. I do my best in this series to share it with you. As I mention in many of my vids, a wilderness backpacking adventure is one of my top recommended ways to make memories with your friends and family, instill wilderness confidence, learn about your gear (and yourself), and to “depussify” your children. That’s because it’s hard work and requires planning and lots of effort. Here we hike in about 7 miles on what soon becomes a snow covered, hidden trail. As shown, wading and post holing through 4 foot snow banks will wear you out, especially at high elevations. The upside to to this difficulty was the complete isolation we quickly achieved on this trip; we saw no one else in the three days we were up there and we owned the basin (though in warmer days this is a very high use area). With a steady but deliberate pace we reach a gorgeous high mountain lake, still partially frozen from the long winter. It is serene and beautiful. On the trail in this Part 1 of “Summer Snow Actual” I discuss trekking poles, backpacks, boots, gaitors, teaching your kids to hike, dog training, and other backpacking subjects …

They guy I’m dating has invited me to go hiking with him and his friends. He mentioned that we’d be carrying all our own gear and hiking 10miles or more. I am guessing he will carry whatever we’d sleep in/on. But I was wondering how grueling I should prepare for it to be. I regularly hike 6 miles a day on easy terrain. This is probably more aggressive.

All I own are hiking shoes (keen waterproof). I will buy or rent the rest from REI. I’m only 5′4″ (female) and so I can probably get by buying a youth backpack. Any recommendations on specs I should look for? Anything else I should prepare for? I am going to practice hiking 10 miles a day starting tomorrow and add to my carrying load each day.
